During a trip to visit family several years back, my great aunt offered me a gelatin dessert. It brought me right back to a season of life when we were watching Flubber on repeat and eating so. much. lime. Jell-O. The major difference? She whisked Cool Whip into the Jell-O before it cooled. It had a really fun layered effect.
Since then, I’ve been making it with varying degrees of success between different brands and adjusting the ratios. Any thawed whipped topping works well, and most gelatin brands work, too. So far, I’ve tried Great Value, Starburst, Welches, and, of course, Jell-O. Welches and Jell-O are slightly outpacing the generic Wal-Mart brand, but all three beat the Starburst ones, I’m sorry to say. The Great Value gelatin just doesn’t have a high rise ratio between the whipped topping and gelatin. The Starburst one looked pretty but didn’t taste as good as the rest.
In future tests, I’ll compare lime to lime, test sugar-free options, and try to incorporate fruit. Aunt Mary made a really yummy pineapple one with chunks of fruit. I know they came from a can, but I don’t know how long to wait before mixing it in so it doesn’t all fall to the bottom.
Ingredients List
- 3 oz Box of Gelatin
- 1 1/2 c Water
- 1 c Whipped Topping

Instructions
- If frozen, thaw Whipped Topping overnight in fridge.
- Gather tiny cups or bowls, single serving applesauce containers are perfect!
- Boil water. (Water boiler or a pot on the stove)
- Add water to gelatin and whisk until combined. About 3 minutes.
- Whisk in whipped topping until combined. About 3 minutes.
- Pour mixture into containers and place in fridge. Allow to set. At 5 hours it might be ok to eat, but I like to leave them overnight.
- Enjoy as is or, if you’re feeling fancy, add a little more whipped topping and add some sprinkles. At this point, you can really go all out.
Notes
- If you decide to go off-script, be mindful of the ratios. One time, I tried making a sugar-free lime version and rounded the gelatin down from 3.4 or 3.6 oz. It came out so thick that it was hard to eat. Here’s how you can calculate the water and whipped topping ratios.
x = amount of gelatin in ounces
